A small picture-puzzle rallye leads the children through the exhibition and challenges them to look closely. Short stories about the artists and their paintings are told in an age-appropriate way. After searching the whole museum for the famous deer, groups go to the art lab and can get creative themselves. The children can paint animals based on their own ideas. They are provided with high-quality colored pencils, oil pastels and watercolors. Geometric shapes made from colored paper expand the creative process to include gluing and cutting. To satisfy the children's urge to move, they can switch between painting on large paper on the floor and drawing at the table. All this leads to the creation of a zoo for their own classroom.

In the current special exhibition "fantastic places.! walla | strobl | vondal | fink", the children study Leonhard Fink's fantastic maps together with Sepp the muskrat. A hands-on folder guides the children through the exhibition, they design their own maps, invent funny travel destinations and draw what they would pack in their suitcases on their imaginary journey. Afterwards, the children create imaginative postcards in our workshop rooms using various painting techniques.

Who painted the wall here? 

The focus of this program is the "House of Artists" and its colorfully painted facade. Many of Gugging's artists have immortalized themselves on this wall. Their style is often unmistakable. The “Gugging ABC” program is a word-game workshop that is especially fun for children just beginning school but also fosters the linguistic development of experienced little writers. 

Together, the children collect a variety of terms according to the alphapet. This creates an awareness of which words begin with which letters. Word and rhyming games accompany us on the short walk from the museum to the "House of Artists." Back at the museum, the group goes to the art lab and paints their own facade together on a long sheet of paper. Afterwards, the children can each design their own building, choosing between different painting and drawing techniques.

Our program offers students a unique approach to art by teaching them how to describe artworks. In an exciting role-play activity, the children take on the role of an art collector by selecting their favorite piece and describing it in words and sentences. However, a small mishap causes the description to be lost, and a competitor finds it. Now, the competitor sets out to discover the described artwork.

Through this adventure, students learn to analyze and describe artworks, develop their appreciation of art and gain a deeper understanding of it. As a grand finale, students are encouraged to unleash their creativity and create their own artwork. The available techniques and materials are as diverse as the pieces in our permanent exhibition.

This programme also focuses on viewing and describing works of art. The pupils slip into the role of a marketing department of a travel agency that offers very unusual trips.

First, we look together at the "fantastic places" of the Gugging artists in the special exhibition. Then the pupils are allowed to design an advertising poster for their invented travel agency in small groups. The choice of technique is up to the participants. Suitable material is provided, from collage to printing.

As a team-building event or based on a shared interest, our workshop offers time and space to get creative again. 

This two-hour workshop allows participants to try out the techniques of the Gugging Artists. These include drawing with ink like Johann Garber, drawing on top of newspaper clippings like Leopold Strobl or experimenting with the collage technique often used as a means of expression in Art Brut. The art education team will present techniques and materials to try out and use to create your own ideas.

August Walla is one of the most important Austrian artists since 1945. The starting point for all of his art is the private mythological universe he created for himself. To capture this, he used a cross-media approach in which there are no hierarchies within the various media. His artistic oeuvre includes painting (paintings, murals, graffiti), drawing, text, sculpture, installation, art in public spaces, performance and photography. August Walla's art is closely linked to his biography. 

This special tour provides insights into August Walla's former private room. He filled the walls of his room in the "House of Artists" with his polytheistic religious philosophy. This visit to see the room and its extraordinary decoration can only be booked in combination with a regular guided tour.
