gehirngefühl.! brain feeling.! art from gugging from 1970 to the present
26.4.2018 – 11.4.20211970 was the first exhibition of works by the later Gugging Artists in the Viennese “Galerie nächst St. Stephan”. It marked the beginning of the ascent of representatives of Art Brut in the art world. Today, working conditions and social recognition have changed completely for the artists, and Gugging Artists such as Johann Hauser, August Walla, and Oswald Tschirtner are world-famous. museum gugging presented works in the form of a juxtaposition of earlier and current Gugging pieces in this this semipermanent exhibition. The show’s focus lay on the present-day generation of artists from Gugging: Laila Bachtiar, Leonhard Fink, Helmut Hladisch, Arnold Schmidt, Jürgen Tauscher, Karl Vondal, or Günther Schützenhöfer were the new Gugging Artists whose predominantly graphic works characterized a large section of the exhibition. The work THE BORING BRAIN FEELING, by Johann Garber, who bridged the generations, served as inspiration for the show’s title.
The 137 exhibited works can also be found in the accompanying book, which additionally contains a time line of the evolution from psychiatric clinic to center of art.
