johann garber.! tinkerer and master painter
07.09.2017-07.01.2018Johann Garber is an artist who has been one of the Gugging Artists for four decades and has made a name for himself as a draftsman, but also as a “painter-on” of readymades. Not only has the oversized ear he designed for the ORF radio station in Vienna become a tourist attraction. He has also painted extensive parts of the „House of Artists“ in Gugging in vivid colors. This is a façade that is probably among the most famous in the world of Art Brut. He designed walls in the interior of the museum building by himself. Garber also loves to make countless objects himself—to “do arts and crafts”, as he himself calls it—and install them outdoors or in his salon in museum gugging.
His works’ exhibition venues include museums and galleries in Europe, the USA, and Japan; all Austrian public collections and important private collections own works by the artist.
A catalog was also dedicated to Johann Garber and to Karl Vondal, likewise presented in this double exhibition. Nina Ansperger and Maria Höger were its co-editors.
