The rediscovery of an artistic outsider.

Philipp Schöpke (1921–1998) is a name known only to a handful of art enthusiasts. His enigmatic and fascinating oeuvre, though, counts without doubt among the most interesting work created in Gugging.  His fate is exemplary of all those Art Brut artists whose work went unnoticed because of their position on the margins of society. From the beginning, Schöpke created a visual language peculiar to him, but which he continued to develop in the course of his artistic activity. His later works also became exciting, when he swapped the clarity of the line for a painterly generosity.

With the exhibition philipp schöpke.! museum gugging extensively presented the artist’s oeuvre for the first time in 2018 and hence enable a reappraisal and (re)discovery of this outsider.

Over 100 works from various collections were exhibited; the accompanying catalog conveys further pieces in addition.
